Founded in 2009, Altaro has grown rapidly over the years. We develop robust backup solutions to address the core data protection needs of businesses and organizations worldwide, as well as the IT resellers, VARs, consultants and managed service providers who serve them.
Our flagship solution is Altaro VM Backup, the natural choice for the backup, recovery and replication of Hyper-V and VMware virtual machines (VMs). It was born out of a need which we ourselves faced in the early days of Altaro: We had found that backing up and restoring VMs was a needlessly complicated process without the use of a 3rd party tool, and existing backup solutions were over-complicated to configure and use, expensive and let us down in times of trouble.
We decided we could do better, with a laser-sharp focus on affordability and ease of use, enabling system admins and service providers alike to provide swift and effective help to their users when disaster strikes. More than 50,000 votes of confidence from our customers (and rave reviews) confirm we were on to something.
Our products today include solutions to back up and restore Microsoft/Office 365 mailboxes and files in OneDrive and SharePoint; physical Windows server backup; and endpoint backup for files stored on roaming and on-premise Windows desktops and laptops.
We also offer an attractive Partner Program for VARs, resellers and IT consultants, as well as backup solutions specifically built for Managed Service Providers (MSPs).

As a co-founder and CEO, David has led Altaro Software since the company was founded in 2009. Before that, David spent 11 years at GFI Software, his last role being Director of Product Management with responsibility for product strategy, OEM relationships and M&A technical due diligence.
David possesses an entrepreneurial mindset with a strong ‘getting things done’ attitude. Although lacking in formal academic education, due to his ‘hacker-style’ approach he is self-taught on various disciplines including software development, sales, marketing and business in general. Through the years, he had the good fortune of working with and for great individuals who helped him get to where he is today.
David sometimes serves as a mentor to entrepreneurs as he enjoys sharing knowledge and learning new things along the way.
Being to the point, truthfulness and avoiding B.S. helps David in the quest to be a good leader.
Stephen leads Altaro’s worldwide sales and marketing division. Before Altaro, he spent 12 years at GFI Software, which he joined in 1999 to handle the company's online marketing activities. Building on the experience gained in this role, he became the company's youngest Director at 24, when he was appointed Director of Marketing. In this role, he was responsible for a vast range of worldwide corporate and product marketing functions. Stephen also spent a number of years concurrently leading TechGenix, a company specializing in online portals for IT experts, with a number of leading websites to its name.
Simon's role includes the design and development of Altaro's products. Simon holds a first class Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Information Technology. His chosen stream of study was Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence specialising in metaheuristics, machine learning, optimization and vehicle routing. Prior to Altaro he founded and led the start up Blaide Software which developed job management and time billing software solutions.
Julian's role at Altaro includes engineering research and development. Julian has years of experience in the design and development of advanced electronics and software solutions. Julian has been involved in the engineering science and ICT industries since 1997. Holding degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Engineering, Julian has successfully piloted several highly varied projects with various international companies.
Colin joined the Altaro team in 2016 to head up the EMEA sales team. Colin has a wealth of experience in technology sales strategy, having worked in the industry for over 20 years. He has an impressive track record for having nurtured the growth of a number of cloud and virtualization centred companies and has created a number of successful EMEA sales operations. He’s previously led companies such as Veeam Software, Vizioncore Inc, Scriptlogic and Embotics.
Charles joined Altaro in June 2017, bringing 6 years of business consultancy experience at PwC and another 6 years of hands-on experience in financial management at United Group of companies. At PwC, Charles held a senior consultant role with specific expertise related to the finance function and business transformation lines of service. At United Group, Charles held a management role with an overall responsibility for all accounting and management reporting of several franchise brands including Opel, Saab, Goodyear, Hertz and Debenhams.
Charles is an ACCA qualified accountant, holds a Masters in Business Administration and an honours degree in commerce. He is also Prince2 certified and a Microsoft certified professional.
An experienced marketing and human resources management professional, Angelica joined Altaro in 2018 as Director of Marketing Operations. She commenced her career in 1995 in the news media industry. In 1999, she joined GFI Software - then a start-up - where she occupied various roles, heading worldwide marketing and HR teams, projects and processes. In 2014, she joined AAT Research Ltd, an innovator in the neurotechnology sphere, as Chief Marketing and Operations Officer. She was VP, People at msales, a global ad performance network, in 2017.
Angelica holds a first class B.A. (Hons) in Communications Studies from the University of Malta.
Matthew joined Altaro in October 2012 having over 12 years’ experience in the I.T. industry, specializing in technical development and global customer experience both in pre-sales and post-sales. Having extensive experience in Technical Training, Support and as a Sysadmin, Matthew has been responsible for the deployment and maintenance of various hardware and software solutions, and has built a solid understanding of customers’ needs. Since joining Altaro, Matthew has committed himself to building an industry-leading support team, focusing on delivering a seamless customer experience that is both fast and accurate, yet remains focused on the consumer.
Edward is a passionate marketer with over a decade of experience in IT marketing and, after a 7-year stint at GFI Software, joined Altaro in October 2012. He led the company’s marketing team for over three years, contributing to its rapid growth from startup to established vendor in the B2B backup space. Serving the IT community with high-quality educational content, Edward and his team help Altaro build thought leadership around Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware.
Chris is responsible for overseeing the design of the technical architecture for any new product or feature forming part of Altaro’s product suite, including UI and UX. His role also involves making sure the team delivers on Altaro’s product roadmap, ensuring code quality, providing guidance on technologies to be used and supporting the QA team as regards testing.
He has a strong technical and coding background, having occupied engineering roles for the past 15 years. He joined Altaro in 2013 as a developer, later advancing to Team Lead, and then Development Manager. Prior to that he formed part of Alert Communications (now Deloitte Digital), Crimsonwing (now KPMG Crimsonwing) and Ascent Software, where he worked on high-profile software development projects for local and international clients across various industries, such as telecommunications and the public sector.
Chris is a Microsoft Certified Professional and holds a B.Sc. In Business & Computing from the University of Malta.
Bringing over 15 years of technology experience to his position, Quintin joined Altaro in 2018 as Head of Technical Operations overseeing product operations, product security and internal IT. Prior to joining Altaro, Quintin held various IT technical and management roles in the software and iGaming industries including a 10-year stint at GFI Software, where he held the position of Director of IT & Ops. Quintin is passionate about building reliable and secure infrastructure to deliver great IT products and services to customers.
Quintin is currently reading a Masters in Business Administration, has a degree in Computing and Information Systems, and is Prince2, Cisco, Microsoft and ITIL certified.
