Altaro, the company behind Oops!Backup™, is a technology start-up that recognized the need to develop outstanding and innovative backup software that goes beyond traditional backup functionality.

Altaro Software employs enthusiastic people who understand that one way to innovate is to take a step back from the implementation details and ask three important questions: How does it work?; Why is it done like that? and most importantly: Says Who?   Through answers to these questions we can break through complacencies in problem-solving and what is sometimes wrongly referred to as ‘Common Wisdom’ – the acceptance of something as is just because everyone does it that way.

Although PC use has become a part of everyday life, it is obvious that backup is still very much underused. It was important for us to understand why this is so and we therefore surveyed PC users to learn why they do not have a backup product.

Our study presented us with 2 main conclusions:

1. Traditional backup products are difficult to use and require the user to manage the backup process, leading to procrastination - often to the point of a backup never taking place.

2. Existing backup products still do not cater for how people actually create and interact with their documents, photos and other files. The thinking behind these products assumes that users only have 1 version of a file which remains unchanged over time. This clearly does not reflect reality or meet the user’s actual needs.

With Oops!Backup we are solving these problems by:

• Creating a product that embodies ease of use: Oops!Backup detects what files the user is working on and automatically makes backups without requiring intervention from the user, therefore freeing users from having to manually manage their backups.
• Oops!Backup not only allows the user to restore files but, unlike any other backup product, it also keeps the different past versions of that file, that is, providing access to most of the changes made to those files over time, with the ability to both review and restore those older versions.
